European Commission funds major transport projects with nearly 2.8 billion euros, including 3.5 million euros for Moldova
The European Commission has selected 94 transport projects that will receive nearly 2.8 billion euros in funding through the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF), aimed at modernizing the transport network across the European Union and associated countries, including the Republic of Moldova.
For the Republic of Moldova, EU support especially targets the improvement of rail connectivity and border crossing points with Romania, thus facilitating the adoption of the EU's standard railway gauge. This will ensure smoother cross-border rail traffic without interruptions and will boost trade and mobility in the region.
The projects also support the development of sustainable and resilient infrastructure, in line with the European Green Deal, and contribute to strengthening solidarity between the EU and the Republic of Moldova in the current geopolitical context.
"Moldova will benefit from 3.5 million euros for modernizing the railway connection between Iași (Romania) and Ungheni (Moldova) — including the rehabilitation of a double track and a single track. The project will reduce travel time between the two countries and considerably increase cross-border rail transport capacity. It is also a milestone: the first electrification of a railway line in the Republic of Moldova, which will remove a significant infrastructure bottleneck at the border," states a communiqué from the EU Delegation to Moldova.
Commissioner for Transport and Sustainable Tourism Apostolos Tzitzikostas said that these investments will create a modern and efficient transport network, supporting both economic development and the green transition in the region and across the continent.
The grant agreements are scheduled to be finalized by October 2025, and the Republic of Moldova is among the key beneficiaries of this strategic European funding.
