Moldovan police open criminal file desecration of graves at Chisinau-based Jewish Cemetery
The police have announced the opening of a criminal file for the desecration of graves in the Jewish Cemetery of Chisinau, after 37 graves were vandalized with Nazi symbols. The incident was reported on June 3, 2025, and is being treated by the authorities with the utmost seriousness.
The notification was made at the Buiucani Police Inspectorate, and shortly thereafter, more teams arrived at the scene, where they found the destruction of several funeral monuments and the presence of extremist symbols.
The police strongly condemned this act of vandalism, describing it as a deeply disrespectful gesture towards the memory of those who had passed and the values of ethnic and religious communities.
Authorities are currently working to identify the perpetrators, in cooperation with representatives of the Jewish community and local authorities, with the goal of restoring order and preventing such incidents from recurring.
“We condemn any form of desecration of burial sites and will enforce the law rigorously,” police officials stated in a communication.
The case has sparked outrage in society and underscores the need to strengthen efforts, in order to protect places of historical and spiritual value.
Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu strongly condemned the vandalism of headstones at the Jewish Cemetery in Chisinau, calling the incident a “barbaric provocation” and a possible act of sabotage aimed at destabilizing the society.
