Moldovans invited to donate blood in national campaign
On the eve of World Blood Donor Day, marked annually on June 14, the Ministry of Health and the National Blood Transfusion Center, with the support of the World Health Organization and the Embassy of Japan in the Republic of Moldova organized an event dedicated to voluntary blood and blood component donors.
The event, held under the theme "Donate Blood, Give Hope. Together We Save Lives!", aimed to recognize the generosity of donors and to encourage the population, especially young people to donate blood regularly.
Attending the event were Minister of Health Ala Nemerenco, ambassadors, WHO representatives, donors, medical workers and civil society representatives.
According to the minister, in 2024 there was a 6% increase in the number of blood donations and a 7% increase in the total amount of blood and blood components collected and processed.
"This reflects a development of the medical system: we have more and more surgeries, including some complex ones, which require an increased volume of blood and derivative products," Ala Nemerenco emphasized.
The minister highlighted the essential role of the National Blood Transfusion Center, which she described as a "real little factory" producing vital components for patient treatment, especially in oncology.
In her speech, Ala Nemerenco expressed the entire medical system's gratitude towards voluntary donors, emphasizing that most remain anonymous, but their gesture has a profound impact.
The minister sent a special message of appreciation to the Ministry of Defense and Ministry of Internal Affairs, mentioning that they represent the "backbone" of donors in the Republic of Moldova.
Nemerenco further encouraged the population, especially young people, to donate blood, highlighting the medical benefits of donation, such as stimulating immunity and regenerating blood cells.
As part of the National Campaign to Promote Voluntary Blood Donation, held between May 26 and June 30, approximately 10,000 donations are collected annually, and over 60 economic agents provide logistical and financial support for events at the national level.
Today blood collection points are open at the Palace of the Republic and the National Blood Transfusion Center in the capital, as well as at "Vasile Alecsandri" National Theater and the Transfusion Center in Bălți. Those interested can also donate at "Nicolae Botgros" Palace of Culture and the Transfusion Center in Cahul.
