Moldovan president says Equality Council exceeds authority by issuing opinion on name of History of the Romanians discipline
The Equality Council has exceeded its authority in issuing the opinion on the name of the subject, History of the Romanians. President Maia Sandu made statements to this effect. She said that, in this case, the Ministry of Education and Research would go to court to seek justice.
'If we follow the logic of this decision, then we should also change the name of the Romanian language. I believe the Council has exceeded its competences on this subject, and it is not the first case, unfortunately. We have seen other decisions in the past, that go beyond the competencies of this Council, very clearly. I understand that the Ministry will go to court, because they disagree with this decision and they are right to disagree,’’ said Maia Sandu at the show, In Depth, at Pro TV Chișinău.
The Equality Council has recently issued an opinion stating that the name of the school subject, History of the Romanians, is discriminatory towards other ethnic groups of Moldova.
In the context, the Ministry of Education and Research (MEC) said that it had taken note of the opinion issued by the Equality Council and would challenge it in court, considering it necessary to clarify the situation through a judicial procedure.
‘’MEC reiterates its commitment to promoting quality education, based on democratic values, respect for diversity and historical truth, in accordance with curricular standards and the realities of Moldova,’’ said MEC in a press release.
